Art Maui 2007

Art Maui is without a doubt THE most prestigious juried art show on Maui, and every year many artists submit their art in an attempt to get into this show. This 2007 year, the 29th year, the number of pieces submitted was 600, and out of this number only 98 pieces were accepted. Because of the challenge of being accepted into this show, there is usually a controversy about why certain artists are represented or why some pieces got in and why others didn't! One of my friend's photographs was accepted, and to support this friend and to check out this year's show, I paid a visit last week to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Schaefer International Gallery. I chose the mid-day & mid-week time to avoid the throngs and to spend 'alone time' with each art piece.

The art represented is a good selection of all media including pottery, koa & mango wood sculpture and furniture, acrylic, oil, ceramic, hand blown glass, found object composition, quilt art, and even a special shadow art piece which was totally amazing.

Below are some of my favorites from the show, minus the beautiful photograph by my friend which the flash from my digital camera obliterated. If you're visiting Maui, the show ends on March 31st, so take some time to view some of Maui's incredibly talented artists. Of course, Maui is known for it's artistic talent and galleries, so this show only represents a small fraction of the great art to be discovered on Maui. The photographs below walk you through the front gate of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and then onto the gallery and the show. Enjoy!
