Maui's Most Famous Visitors Return

Every year about this time the first humpback whale scouts show up in the waters off Maui. They are back from the cold northern Pacific to frolic, mate and calve in the warm waters between Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai and Lanai. This is why this season of the year is special to many like myself because of the return of these majestic, lovable leviathans. There is nothing quite like hearing a whale song with its bass moans, grunts and whistles. There is nothing quite like seeing their acrobatic leaps. There are no words to describe their stinky breath when they are close to you. All in all, the experience of hearing, seeing and smelling humpback whales is a thrill. And no matter how often you've experienced them, your heart races faster when you know they're back!

You don't need to go on a whale-watching boat to hear them either, for you can simply hold your breath and dive under the water near shore and more often than not, you'll hear their eerie songs if they are anywhere close. Their sounds travel quite a distance.

Right now, the Maui landscape is resplendent and vivid, electric green because of the recent rainfall. The snowbirds (winter HUMAN tourists) are returning. The weather has cooled off, and the roadways are getting busy again. And we are once again welcoming home Na Kohola, THE WHALES!

What a wonderful description of the whale! I want to hear them on day for myself.
